This paper strongly asserts that the various features of the PVC phyla are due to convergence (i.e., analogues) or due to horizontal gene transfer. They point out that PVC bacteria encode no homologs of the numerous nuclear pore complex proteins that are conserved among all eukaryotes. They also point out that there is no spliceosomes.
