Ergodicity is irrelevant to statistical mechanics, additional note

Chapter 1 of G. Gallavotti,  Statistical Mechanics: a short treatise (Springer 1999) explains that Boltzmann realized the discrepancy in the time scales, and had an insight that almost all microstates give the same thermodynamics. However, this was not understood by his followers and was soon forgotten. That is, the comment about the followers the author wrote in Note 2.4 is correct.

To confess the truth, the author suspected that Boltzmann himself did not understand statistical mechanics, but now the author realizes that Boltzmann was really great.

However, the author guesses that Boltzmann realized his earlier mistake when he ruminated his own response to Zermelo’s criticism of his proof of irreversibility from mechanics.
